Erica Hsu

Biography
Erica Hsu recently completed her postgraduate MA degree in Fine Art at University of the Arts London. After finishing her BA in Taiwan at Taipei National University of Art, she was nominated for the TNUA Contemporary Art Prize in Taipei and the HUAYA Youth Award in Beijing, China. Her current body of work focuses on the relationship between the physical and spiritual and how the two influence each other. She is inspired by the human body, architecture and religion when creating her work. In her work she strives to engage in the sublimation of life and death; for Erica, painting encompasses a higher divinity which she utilises to depict unnerving and eerie compositions for her work. For example, in some paintings she incorporates limbs and figural aspects whilst others take on the form of an architectural structure such as a Baroque church. Erica hopes that through the combination of the figural and metaphysical in her work, she creates a space of worship between viewer and painting.
