Alexander Appleby

Biography

Alexander Appleby’s (B. 1995, Lancaster) paintings are inspired by the natural beauty of the northern English landscape. Drawing directly from experience of the rugged terrain, subtle textures and vivid colours of the region, Appleby’s practice seeks to beautify trees and plants that might usually be overlooked. Working outside the confines of realism, his natural subjects are often transformed in imaginary scenarios. With inspirations as wide and diverse as 19th Century woodblock prints and the digital realm, Appleby’s distinctive visual language blends the past and post-modern. His scenes envision a world devoid of human life, contemplating prehistoric or post-human landscapes. These paintings are a microcosm to explore greater themes, contributing to a crucial and ongoing dialogue in which climate change is addressed.
