Sunyoung Hwang
Sunyoung Hwang is a South Korean London-based artist who graduated from the Slade School of Fine Art with her BFA, where she won the Steer Memorial Prize for her degree show and from the Royal College of Art in Painting for her MA. She is also a recent winner of the prestigious Chadwell Award, the third prize winner of the Bath Open Art Prize and was one of the ‘Six Talents to Watch from RCA’S 2016 Graduate Show’ featured by NY based magazine, Sight Unseen. She has also been marked as ‘one to watch’ by Saatchi and her work has been sold to private collections in the UK, US, Asia, Australia, and the UAE.
Hwang specialises in large-scale abstract paintings and has a process-led approach to her work. She enjoys finding coherence and balance between the order and disarray of this approach, resulting in organised chaos. Hwang’s colour palette is similarly spontaneous, with each painting’s colours being instinctively selected. The inspiration for her work is drawn from physical, sensory, emotional, and psychological experiences.
