The painting (untitled 2021) began by thinking about the politics of the gaze and looking at religious mythology in painting, in this instance, imagery of the Original Sin or the Garden of Hesperides. Treatment of the subject by various historical artists was the catalyst for the painting, which was then combined with imagery from personal memory. However, Harding believes it is best to leave the work open to interpretation rather than prescribing a story.
To create this work she used a pentimento technique of layering paint so that elements and figures are both concealed and revealed within the painting. This acts to slow down and prolong the experience of viewing the work.
