Liliya Art Gallery is delighted to announce its last exhibition of 2023, Abstracting Rhythms, a group show with Laurence Jansen, Cai Arfon Bellis, Emma Lake, bill daggs and Fran Hayes.
The exhibition takes inspiration from Walter Pater’s concept of Ander-Streben (‘other-striving’), the thought that each art has its own specific limitations, but that this can be circumvented by different fields ‘reciprocally lending eachother new forces’. One borrowed force in Abstracting Rhythms is music, with selected artists achieving the expression of rhythm in the realm of visual art. Titles of twentieth century paintings were abound with compositions, études and rhythms. Abstracting Rhythms situates this close relationship between art and music in a contemporary context. With musical and artistic limits evolving in tandem, new genres facilitate new artistic possibilities. As Cubist painter František Kupka sought to produce a ‘fugue of colours like Bach did with music’, the bass of a jungle track guides the tempo of splattered paint.
